Also they felt if he wanted to get rid of Cailan, then he should have had the courage to take him out himself before the battle with the darkspawn, not sacrifice half the army and the Grey Wardens. However, the reason I usually did not spare him was because I play elves and he signed his death warrant when he sold the elves into slavery to fund his war effort. Not only that but history had shown in previous Blights Orlais would liberate a country from the darkspawn only occupy it themselves, so Loghain's fears about that were not without foundation.
